You’re about four months out from your big day, and you might be thinking,
“What time do I need to be ready? When should hair and makeup be done? How do we fit everything in?”
Great news—this blog is going to walk you through all of that, complete with a real wedding timeline example, helpful tips, and alternate timelines if your day looks a little different.
As a wedding photographer in Westchester, NY, I’ve seen firsthand how a smooth, realistic schedule can make or break the vibe of your day. A solid timeline helps keep things relaxed, keeps the focus on joy, and gives you more time with the people you love.
Let’s talk about what causes the most wedding day delays: hair and makeup running late.
If you’re building your timeline, here’s a golden rule: Hair and makeup should be 100% finished at least one hour before the bride gets dressed.
Why? Because that last hour is full of important moments:
If hair and makeup run behind, the whole day starts playing catch-up. What gets cut? Usually family portraits, creative portraits of the two of you, or time on the dance floor. Not ideal.
It’s so much better to be ready early and relaxing than running late and stressed.
Pro Tip: Talk to your hair and makeup artists about exactly how much time they’ll need. Ask them:
Use their answers to build a start time that allows for the full group and a comfortable cushion. Padding in 30–60 minutes of “wiggle room” can make the whole morning feel fun, not frantic.
Let’s walk through an actual Westchester wedding timeline I recently photographed, with 275 guests, two photographers, and plenty of moving parts.

| 2:30 PM | Hair and makeup fully complete |
| 3:00 PM | Travel to venue |

This schedule worked beautifully because everyone was on time and there was enough buffer built in to keep things relaxed. The result? Stunning portraits, joyful candids, and a couple who got to enjoy every moment.
