In today’s fast paced world, moments of connection stand out as rare treasures. As a Westchester based wedding and portrait photographer, I have the privilege of capturing these moments of love, and some stories are so special that they deserve to be shared. This is the story of my high school friend RK, his incredible proposal to Robin, and how I had the honor of documenting a day filled with surprises, love, and laughter.
One August evening my phone buzzed with a call from RK, one of my best friends from high school. He was more excited than usual, and soon enough, I understood why. As we were talking a text arrived with a picture of a custom engagement ring, a masterpiece that perfectly symbolized his love for Robin. As he shared his plans to propose, I offered my full support and told him I’d be there for anything he needed.
A month later, RK reached out again, this time ready to discuss the details. He wanted to make the proposal memorable and asked if I would photograph it! He sent me a link to the New York Botanical Garden’s “Glow” event. It is a magical winter experience filled with light displays, food trucks, and seasonal cheer.
As I scrolled through photos and videos of the event, one feature caught my eye: the “Light Gazebo.” It was the epitome of romance, with glowing, ethereal lighting that would not only set the mood but also create stunning photographs. With the venue decided, we brainstormed how to keep the proposal a surprise. We decided that RK would tell Robin that I needed to shoot a couple’s session at the event to build my portfolio. It was simple and convincing.
Two months later, the day of the proposal arrived. RK and Robin picked me up, and as we entered the garden, Robin walked ahead with a friend while RK unlocked his car for me to retrieve some gear. This gave us a brief moment to snap a few photos of RK with the ring. His excitement was infectious!
The evening unfolded beautifully. From the stunning festive holiday lights to the charming model train show, the New York Botanical Garden was alive with holiday magic. We wandered through the light displays, capturing candid moments of RK and Robin walking hand in hand. I guided them towards the grand finale: the Light Gazebo.
As we approached, Robin grew skeptical that there was anything down the path we were taking, suggesting we turn back towards the food trucks. RK reassured her, and just around the corner, the gazebo came into view. The moment had arrived. I instructed them to stand back-to-back for a few playful poses. Then, RK turned, gathered his courage, and delivered a heartfelt speech that ended with the question we had all been waiting for.
I focused on documenting every angle, every tear, and every smile. Guests passing by cheered and offered their congratulations, adding to the joy of the moment. Once the emotions settled, we took posed photos under the gazebo, the soft glow of the lights creating a breathtaking backdrop. A staff member from the Botanical Garden even snapped a picture for their social media, sharing the magic with an even wider audience.
After the proposal, RK revealed the next surprise: a dinner reservation at a nearby restaurant where their families were waiting to celebrate. Throughout the dinner, I switched between being a guest and capturing key moments. Toasts were made, an Italian musician serenaded the group, and desserts were shared. As I edited and printed a few photos on site, the joy in the room was palpable. These moments, filled with love and connection, were what truly mattered.
This unforgettable evening reminded me why I love what I do. Being able to freeze these fleeting moments of love and joy for my clients is an honor I don’t take lightly. Whether it’s a grand proposal at the New York Botanical Garden or a cozy winter celebration at Untermyer Gardens in Yonkers, Westchester offers endless opportunities for capturing love stories.
To RK and Robin, thank you for letting me be a part of your journey. To those reading this, if you’re ready to document your own love story, let’s connect. Together, we will create timeless images that celebrate your most cherished moments.
